Sukhyung Kang focuses on ‘painting’ itself. His work is faithful to his instincts, and it does not rely on a conceptual understanding of aesthetics or other explanation. Using oil paints and spray paint, the artist fills the canvas with abstract forms whose lines emphasize spontaneity through the speed and rhythm of his brushstrokes. The act of painting remains visible in the final works. Rather than relying on meaning imbued in the individual elements of the work, the paintings rely on the holistic experience of the viewer and the inherent power of image to stimulate intuitive sensibilities and associations. The artist emphasizes the qualities inherent to the medium such as color, line, and form.

Wonjin Kim records and interprets imperfect memories and moments within literary structures. In her recent series, Blank on Timing, the artist introduced an installation of works featuring Korean characters transposed onto automotive timing belts, which circulate in a flowing motion creating words and spaces with ambiguous meanings. In the series of Melting Strata, she creates works were phrases collected from classic literature and her own writings formed in paraffin wax are placed on a hot plate, where the quoted text (or the meaning of the text) gradually melts. The appearance and disappearance of the text of the work serves as a metaphor for the human process of filling in the void in fragmented memories. Witnessing this process situates viewers in the middle of a major narrative, and sometimes the viewers come across hidden records. The two series of works share qualities regarding their context as a record of an empirical narrative and a chronology of the moment.

Ene Kim is interested in the various sensations caused by social relations. Through observation of people in her proximity or unspecified people on social networking services, the artist forms real and fictional relationships. Known primarily as a painter, the artist turns to printmaking in this exhibition. This change in media better suits the succinct way in which she depicts her subjects, which she constructs as expressionless faces staring straight ahead. The faces are intuitively and concisely rendered, and the succinctness of the images compliments the lightness of the paper on which they are printed. The subtle sensation experienced between oneself and the images of the expressionless faces in her work serves as a standard against which a sense of relational distance and bond may be measured. Considered as a whole, the visual impact of the one hundred prints rivals any painting.

The work of Haeun Lee creates a strong impression through highly saturated painting. In the surreal landscape with intense colors and deep perspective, a flat icon abruptly appears. The images of columns, walls, and stairs originating from her unconsciousness represent confusion and fear, and act as both signifier and signified in the narrative. The elongated canvas contains an illusory narrative where the unconscious world and the real world intersect. In real space, the image in the canvas appears as an object. The artist experiments with various media, moving between two- dimensionality and three-dimensionality, centering on the two axes of reality and illusion, and her perspective focuses on the exploration of space. At two points during the exhibition period, objects derived from the paintings will be installed in the exhibition, presenting an altered space.

Youngmin Choi assumes the sea as a place to comfort the weariness brought on by daily life and relationships, and he represents seascapes on the canvas as a means of self-comfort. The sea evokes personal memories and emotions, allowing the viewers to breathe deeply for a moment and peacefully consider the flow of life. The paintings are created as if depicting records of changes in the weather and time, and the long-take video work depicts the constant flow of the waves, surfers, and a sea colored by the sunset. Natural landscapes may be part of the ordinary, but they are difficult to fully enjoy in these days, and the artist provides comfort and consolation through the unique lyricism of his work.
